Suppertime
come on in it's suppertime
won't you take some time and stay
been cooking since Monday and there's plenty of room
take off your hat and grab a plate
we got kale and collards braised
we got swine in honey glazed
so take a fork bow your head
and contemplate your sinful ways
the biscuits are a handsome lot
the gravy's thick and full of salt
help yourself and pass it around
don't forget to lick the pot
there's dirty rice and sugar peas
black white red and beans of green
mashed potatoes buttered corn
more food than you ever seen
sunshine won't you be mine
I got pepper in my shoe and lord it feels fine
oh my sweet thing let's start eating
sometimes love is wonderful and greasy
come on in it's suppertime
stewed or boiled baked or fried
everything will satisfy
the chicken dumplings sure are something
so's the sweet potato pie
there's jumbalaya andouille
shrimp creole and ettouffee
fried green tomatoes french fried potatoes
what's a hungry soul to say
sunshine won't you be mine
I got pepper in my shoe and lord it feels fine
oh my sweet thing let's start eating
sometimes love is wonderful and greasy
come on in it's suppertime
there's deviled eggs and oyster stew
smothered pork chops onions too
pickled pigs feet oxtail soup
don't forget the barbecue
we got pot roast cheese grits coleslaw catfish
sorghum for your dinner rolls okra and a casserole
hush puppies crawfish fritters in a pink dish
and Mississippi Mud Pie if you got the itch
sunshine won't you be mine
I got pepper in my shoe and lord it feels fine
oh my sweet thing let's start eating
sometimes love is wonderful and greasy
come on in it's suppertime
