POSSUMS
written by Patrick Bloom (©2003 Small Man Music ASCAP)

underneath the tarpaulin we found ourselves a Cadillac
filled the tank with piss and whiskey Jesus on the running board
drove onto the interstate choked in dust and locusts
sallied through the stoplights and tried our best to stay on course

at midnight we could see sunflowers growing by the roadside
they turned into the headlights bobbing fellows in a yellow sea
the atmosphere was fair and so became our disposition
when the possum struck the bell cap we were rattled from our reverie

everywhere possums
everywhere possums
everywhere possums
everywhere I go

came upon a possum on a path under the moonlight
crazy eyed and hypnotized chalky in his Sunday black
but dinner waits for no man so step aside step aside
a lit configuration as he headed for the chicken shack

everywhere possums
everywhere possums
everywhere possums
everywhere I go

women dressed in rayon dressed in gowns of papered beehive
all skinny legs and bony ankles Christmas in their hosiery
accordions played polkas and the old ones waltzed 'til midnight
for a dollar they would lift their skirts for everyone to see

everywhere possums
everywhere possums
everywhere possums
everywhere I go
